Farland, Cachelin Garner NEWLA Weekly Honors

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University junior defender Shelby Farland and freshman attack Riley Cachelin have been selected as the New England Women’s Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively.

Farland posted five ground balls and three draw controls in a pair of games last week for the Bears at the SpringFling games in West Palm Beach, Florida. The Fiskdale, Massachusetts native contributed two goals, two groundballs and a pair of draw controls in a 17-6 setback to Vassar College, and a goal, three groundballs and a draw in a 15-8 loss to Fredonia State University.

Cachelin tallied two goals and an assist in her first two games in a BSU uniform. The Westwood, Massachusetts product notched her first career goal and added an assist against Vassar, and also found the back of the net versus Fredonia State.

In 34 games over three seasons at Bridgewater State, Farland has amassed 12 goals, two assists, 58 ground balls, 17 draws and 20 caused turnovers.

The BSU women’s lacrosse team will travel to Salve Regina University on Tuesday afternoon to take on the Seahawks at 4:30.  The Bears then host the Engineers of MIT in their home opener on Thursday evening at seven.
