Field Hockey Downs Salem State, 4-2

SALEM, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State Bears defeated the Salem State Vikings, 4-2, in the completion of a suspended Little East Conference field hockey game from Wednesday, October 19th.

The Bears were leading the game, 4-1, until play was suspended with 13:48 remaining due to poor weather conditions.

The win improves Bridgewater State to 11-5 on the season and 6-4 in the Little East while the Vikings slip to 6-9 overall and 2-8 in conference play.

The visiting Bears scored three times in the first half in a game that was played in a driving rainstorm at Salem's Alumni Field last week.

Salem State was able to jump out to an early 1-0 when Lauren DiCredico (Tewksbury, MA) scored her first goal of the year on an assist from Kristin Santanello (Swampscott, MA) in the fourth minute.

However, Bridgewater State came back and scored three unanswered goals to take a 3-1 lead into the intermission.

Shelby Farland (Fiskdale, MA) got the Bears on the board with her team-leading 13th goal of the season on an assist from Beth Phillips (Worcester, MA) at 17:07. Bridgewater grabbed the lead a minute and a half later when Emma Delaney (Townsend, MA) buried home a corner on Phillip's second assist of the game.

Later in the half, Sarah Gendron (North Dighton, MA) dug the ball from underneath Salem State goalie Michaela Boyer's (South Hadley, MA) pads and wristed a shot into the open net for a 3-1 Bridgewater State lead.  For the freshman Gendron, the goal marked the first of her collegiate goal.

The Bears controlled play for most of the period, outshooting the Vikings 8-2 in the opening stanza.

In the second half, Phillips notched her fourth point of the game as she scored off an assist from Breanna Clement (Pittsfield, ME) to give Bridgewater a comfortable 4-1 lead.  The game would be stopped just over 2 ½ minutes later.

Santanello scored a goal for the Vikings on an assist from Nicole Roy (Melrose, MA) to make the final 4-2 after play resumed on Tuesday afternoon.

Cassie Johansen (Port Jefferson Station, NY) was credited with the win recording a save for Bridgewater State.

Boyer made five saves in the loss for the Vikings.

Salem State will play Anna Marie College at home on Thursday, October 27th.  The Bears host Eastern Connecticut on Saturday at 1:00 PM in their home finale.
