Erika Smith

Coach Smith will be entering her sixth season as the Bears' head coach in 2011 after serving one season as an assistant on the staff.  Erika is a  2005 graduate of Bridgewater State where she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education with a concentration in teaching.  She was also a three-sport athlete competing on the varsity field hockey and women's lacrosse teams as well as the club ice hockey team.  

Erika was a four-year starter and three-year captain on the field hockey team from 2000-2003.  She amassed 13 goals and 16 assists for a total of 42 points in 66 games and was named to both the MASCAC and Little East All-Conference Teams in each of her final three seasons. In 2004, she was selected as the Bridgewater State College Female Scholar Athlete of the Year.

Prior to coaching at BSC, Smith was an assistant field hockey coach at Bridgewater-Raynham High School during the fall of 2004.  She is also currently the head women's lacrosse coach at BSC as she was named to that position prior to the start of the 2006 lacrosse season.  Erika also coached lacrosse at Oliver Ames High School in Easton and has also worked at the South Shore Lacrosse Camp in Weymouth.

In her five seasons at the helm of the BSC field hockey program, Erika has posted a record of 52-44 (.542) which inlcludes a 16-6 mark in 2007 and an ECAC New England Tournament championship.  The Bears' 16 wins that year was the most in team history and for her efforts, Smith was selected as the MASCAC Coach of the year.  

A native of Raynham, Massachusetts, Smith is currently a Physical Education teacher at Brockton High School. She just recently received her Master's of Science degree in Physical Education from Bridgewater State.




Kelly Downs

Kelly Downs joined the Bridgewater State field hockey coaching staff prior to the 2010 campaign. A native of Hanover, Massachusetts, Coach Downs was an outstanding defender on the Bears' field hockey team for four seasons from 2006 to 2009.  As reliable as they come, she never missed a game over the course of her four-year career and started all but one.  In 75 career contests, Kelly accumulated five goals and five assists for a total of 15 points to go along with 16 defensive saves.

The field hockey program posted a record of 40-35 over the course of Downs' career including a 16-6 mark during her sophomore season of 2007.  That year the Bears set the program record for wins in a season and the team also captured the ECAC Division III New England Tournament championship.

Downs was a three-time selection to the Little East Conference All-Star Team.  She garnered first team honors in 2007 and was a second team selection in 2008.  This past season, Kelly was also named to the Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III All-New England West Region Second Team.

In 2009, Downs was chosen as the Student Leadership Award winner by the Bridgewater State Department of Athletics. She also played one season on the BSU women's Lacrosse team in 2008 as she tallied 11 goals and two assists in 20 games.  The women's lacrosse team went 15-5 that season, captured both the New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) regular season and tournament championships and advanced to the championship game of the ECAC Division III New England Tournament.

Coach Downs is a 2010 graduate of Bridgewater State with a Bachelor of Science degree in Management.




Christine Kemp

Christine Kemp is in her first season on the Bridgewater State field hockey coaching staff. Kemp is a 2011 graduate of Skidmore College in New York where she was a two-sport athlete playing field hockey and basketball.

Kemp was a three-time First Team All-American, and three-time Liberty League Player of the Year while playing forward on the Skidmore field hockey team from 2007 to 2010.  She was also a two-time National Player of the Year finalist and was twice named the regional player of the year.

Kemp ended her collegiate career as the Thoroughbred’s all-time leader in points (202) and assists (62).  She also holds the program single season records for both scoring (78 pts) and assists (22) which she set in 2010.  The Skidmore field hockey team posted an overall record of 66-16 during her career including a 20-2 mark in 2010 when the squad advanced all the way to the NCAA Division III Tournament semifinals.

Christine was also a three-year starting point guard on the Skidmore women’s basketball team which captured the Liberty League regular season title in 2009-2010.  She also captained the squad and was selected as the team’s defensive player of the year in 2010-2011.

Kemp has been an instructor at the Skidmore Field Hockey Camp since 2008 and recently worked at Peak Performance in Malta, New York where she trained high school athletes in conditioning and a variety of field hockey skills.




Amanda Deppe

Amanda Deppe joins the Bridgewater State field hockey coaching staff in 2011.  A 2007 graduate of Bentley University with a Bachelors of Science degree in Marketing, Deppe played four seasons for the Falcon field hockey team from 2003 to 2006 and was a starter each of her final three years.

Deppe, who captained the team as a senior in 2006, helped Bentley advance to the NCAA Division II Tournament three times including a pair of trips to the National Championship game. 

Amanda has coached for the U.S. Futures Program in Massachusetts and has served as an instructor at various field hockey camps in New York for over ten years.
