Ferreira Named MASCAC Baseball Player & Pitcher of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Bridgewater State University junior outfielder Joshua Ferreira has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week.

A native of Fall River, Massachusetts, Ferreira was named Most Valuable Player of the 2011 MASCAC Championships after leading the Bears to the tournament crown.  He Batted .409 (9-22) at plate with a homer, four doubles, seven RBI and nine runs scored during the tournament.  He also posted a .458 on base percentage as well as a .727 slugging percentage.

On the mound, Ferreira went the distance in the Bears' 20-6 championship game win over Westfield State as he struck out ten. He also picked up the save in Bridgewater's 13-9 winner's bracket final triumph over the Owls.

Ferreira went 3-for-6 with a home run, in the tournament opening game 18-5 win over Worcester State. He rapped a big two-run double in the 12th inning of the winner's bracket final victory over host Westfield, and added a 2-for-4 performance and reached safely three times in a 6-2 loss to the Owls.  Ferreira capped off the tournament by going 3-for-6 with a pair of doubles, three runs and three RBI in the championship game win over Westfield.

In 38 games this season, Ferreira is batting .373 (57-153) with five home runs, 12 doubles, three triples, 37 runs scored and 21 RBI.  He also has six stolen bases to his credit and is presently carrying a .588 slugging percentage and a .435 on base percentage.

Ferreira currently leads the MASCAC in total bases (90) and is second among the conference leaders in both hits and triples.  He also ranks third in home runs, runs scored and slugging percentage, and fifth in batting average and doubles.

The Bridgewater State University baseball team will compete in the NCAA Division III Tournament for the 13th time in program history, with regional play getting underway on May 18th.
