Rick Smith has enjoyed 18 successful seasons at Bridgewater State, which has included nine trips to the NCAA regional championships and two trips to the NCAA Division III College World Series in 1996 and 1997. His overall record of 449-242-4 (.649) during that period makes him the winningest coach in BSU athletics history.  In 2009, Coach Smith became the first head coach in program history to reach the 400-win milestone (an 18-8 win over UMass Dartmouth on April 23rd at Alumni Park).

In 1996 and again in 2000, Rick was named the ABCA New England Division III "Coach of the Year".  He was also selected the MASCAC "Coach of the Year" in 1998 and again in 2000. BSC has won or shared the MASCAC regular season title nine times during his head coaching tenure.  His teams have also won at least 20 games in 16 of his 18 seasons at the helm, with two 30-win campaigns in 1996 (31-10) and 2000 (30-9).

Before coaching at Bridgewater State, Coach Smith had been an assistant coach at Stonehill College for seven seasons (1983-89). He then went on to be the assistant at Bridgewater under former head coach Glenn Tufts from 1990-93. 

Rick is a 1972 graduate of Bridgewater-Raynham High School where he starred as a pitcher for the Trojans. He was taken in the fifth round of the annual Major League Baseball baseball draft by the St. Louis Cardinals. He now resides in Raynham with his daughters, Ariana and Sydney.




Josh White

A former BSU pitching standout, Josh White joined the Bears' baseball staff in 2011 and serves as the team's pitching coach.

A 2008 graduate of Bridgewater State with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education, White appeared in 42 games and made 28 starts on the mound for the Bears from 2002 to 2006.  He posted a record of 19-9 with ten complete games and three saves while recording a 4.21 earned run average and striking out 203 batters in 192.1 innings of work.

White, who hails from Brockton, Massachusetts, is one of only two pitchers in Bridgewater State baseball history to strikeout over 200 batters.  2009 BSU Athletics Hall of Fame inductee Kevin Cadres fanned 257 batters from 1998 to 2001.

Along with ranking second in career strikeouts, White is also fourth in wins, and his 69 strikeouts in 2004 is tied for fourth in the Bears’ baseball record book.  He was a two-time MASCAC All-Conference selection, garnering first team accolades in 2004 and second team honors in 2006.

Prior to joining the BSU baseball coaching staff, White served as the pitching coach at Curry College in 2010 and 2011.  He also was an assistant coach for the Brockton Legion baseball team in 2005 and 2006, and was the Director of Operations at Extra Innings in West Bridgewater from 2004 to 2010.

White presently resides in East Bridgewater and works at Caton Connector in Kingston.




Matt Poitras

Coach Poitras is entering his eighth season on the baseball coaching staff.  A native of Acushnet, Mass., Matt was an outstanding shortstop for the Bears from 1994 to 1997, as he batted .329 during his four-year career while also registering an impressive .940 fielding percentage. 

Matt's junior and senior seasons of 1996 and 1997 were his and also the programs most successful campaigns.  In 1996, Matt batted .335 with 9 stolen bases, 39 runs scored and 34 runs batted in as he helped the Bears to not only capture the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championship but also finish third at the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. Matt was named to the NCAA New England Regional All-Tournament Team in 1996. 

The following season, 1997, Matt was nothing short of impressive as he batted .379 with 4 home runs, 5 triples, 15 doubles, 49 runs batted in and 51 runs scored.   The Bears captured the Mid-Atlantic Regional title and advanced to Division III Championship Tournament for the second straight season.

Matt was named to the All-MASCAC Team on two separate occasions, garnering first team as well as MASCAC Player of the Year honors in 1997.  He was also selected to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-New England First Team in 1997, the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) All-New England First Team, and the ECAC All-New England Second Team.  Matt was also selected to play at the NEIBA College Baseball All-Star Game in 1997 as well.

Coach Poitras presently resides in his hometown of Acushnet and works at MD Cabinetry in Raynham, Mass.




Lou Colitti

A resident of Brockton, Massachusetts, Lou Colitti is entering his 14th season on the Bridgewater State baseball staff as he has been coaching at high level venues in New England for over 30 years.

From 1974 until 1994, Lou was the head coach at Stonehill College where he captured an ECAC Championship in 1980 and was also selected as the New England Coach of the Year.  He was also the head coach of the original Cranberry League team in Brockton, the Brockton Merchants, for two seasons (1978, 1979).  From 1995 to 1997, Lou served as an assistant at Massasoit Community College in Brockton, helping the Warriors reach postseason play each year including a berth in the Junior College World Series in 1995. 

Along with coaching at Bridgewater State, Lou is also the head coach of the Rockland Cardinals of the Cranberry League.
