Men's Soccer Posts 1-0 Senior Night Win Over UMass Dartmouth

By Jim Fenton

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Junior Tyler Chang (Acushnet, Mass.) recorded the first game-winning goal of his Bridgewater State University men's soccer career Tuesday night.

Chang scored with 11:56 remaining to give the Bears a 1-0 non-conference victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Senior Night at Mazzaferro Field.

BSU improved to 8-5-1 while the Corsairs are 6-7-2. The Bears own a 28-12-6 lead in the series dating back to 1979.

Junior goalkeeper Kyle Sullivan (Enfield, Conn.) made two saves for his sixth shutout of the season. He has three shutouts in the last four games.

The lone goal came off a corner kick after the teams had played scoreless soccer for just over 78 minutes.

Senior Filippo Mucci (Vineyard Haven, Mass.) sent a corner kick from the left side towards the top of the six where Chang converted for his fourth goal of the season.

Chang sent a leaping one-timer off the inside of the left post and in for the score.

BSU had a 12-7 edge in overall shots and an 11-2 advantage in corner kicks.

UMass Dartmouth senior goalkeeper Ethan Donahue (Salem, N.H.) made four saves. Freshman Cameron Walty (Weymouth, Mass.) had two of the five shots by the Bears.

It was the second 1-0 win over the season for BSU, the other coming against Westfield State on Sept. 27.

In a ceremony prior to the game, the Bears honored senior members of the team.

The group included Mucci, Gavin Norton (Rockland, Mass.), Brady McDonald (Florence, Mass.), Nick Anselmo (Tyngsborough, Mass.), Dominek Borden (New Bedford, Mass.), Ryan Healy (Cork, Ireland), Melvin Alves (Brockton, Mass.) and Brett Ghelfi (Halifax, Mass.).

BSU will be on the road for its final non-conference game, traveling to New London, Conn., to meet the Coast Guard Academy.

The game at noon on Saturday will be the first between the two programs since 2015. Coast Guard is 7-3-3 and 3-0-1 in the NEWMAC.

UMass Dartmouth hosts Plymouth State at noon on Saturday.
