Women's Tennis Notches Sixth Straight Win

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University women's tennis team remained undefeated on the season as the host Bears edged Roger Williams University, 5-4, this afternoon at the Dr. Henry Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.

Bridgewater improves to 6-0 with the non-conference win, while the visiting Hawks fall to 5-3.  The Bears are unbeaten through six matches for the second straight season as the 2009 squad went 9-0 before first tasting defeat.

The Bears won two of three doubles matches and split the six singles flights to come away with the hard fought victory.  Freshman Jenna Williamson (Ludlow, Mass.) highlighted the victory for BSU as she posted a 6-1, 6-4 straight set win at number three singles and teamed with sophomore Lauren Hopp (Dartmouth, Mass.) for an 8-5 triumph at third doubles.

Bridgewater's doubles tandem of seniors Lauren Donnelly (Centerville, Mass.) and Jessica Francis (West Barnstable, Mass.) earned an 8-3 decision at the first flight, while junior Bridget Murphy (Mattapoisett, Mass.) and freshman Alison Joseph (Dartmouth, Mass.) each posted straight set wins at number five and number six singles respectively.  Murphy won her first set in a 10-8 tie-breaker and then breezed, 6-1, in set two.

Sophomore Tracy Klein (New City, N.Y.) and junior Amanda Wolfe (Mansfield, Mass.) led the way for Roger Williams as they paired up for an 8-6 decision at the second doubles flight.  Klein won in straight sets (6-2, 6-1) at second singles, while Wolfe battled back from a set down at number four (3-6, 6-3, 10-4). 

Hawks' freshman Samantha Curran (Cumberland, R.I.) earned the victory in the battle of the top singles players with a 6-2, 6-3 straight set win. 

The Bears travel to UMass Boston on Saturday for a one o'clock Little East Conference match with the Beacons.  Roger Williams heads to Wentworth for a noontime match with the Leopards in a showdown of Commonwealth Coast Conference opponents.
