McPherson, Espinosa Named MASCAC Men's Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Bridgewater State University senior Michael McPherson and sophomore Brian Espinosa have been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Men’s Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week.

McPherson was named the MASCAC Field Athlete of the Week for the fifth time this season, while Espinosa was chosen as either the MASCAC Track or Field Athlete of the Week for the fourth time.

McPherson won the shot put title and captured All-ECAC honors to lead the BSU men’s track and field team at the ECAC Division III Championships this past weekend at the New Balance Armory in New York City.  The Mansfield, Massachusetts recorded a distance of 55 feet, 0.75 inches (16.78 meters) to win the shot put event.

Espinosa also paced the Bears at the ECAC Championships as he posted a third place showing in the 200-meter dash and a fifth place finish in the long jump to garner All-ECAC status in both events.  The Rehoboth, Massachusetts native registered a time of 22.17 seconds in the 200, and a leap of 22 feet, 8.75 inches (6.85 meters) in the long jump.

McPherson will compete in the shot put at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships this upcoming weekend at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois.  McPherson, who is ranked 12th in a field of 13 competitors, recorded his qualifying distance of 55 feet, 8.50 inches (16.98 meters) at the Harvard Open back on December 8th. He also broke his own school record in the shot put with that toss.

In addition to his indoor shot put mark, McPherson also holds the Bears' outdoor records in the shot put (55'7.50") and hammer throw (172'2.00").

In just his first season with the Bears, Espinosa already owns BSU individual indoor marks in both the long jump (22’9.00”) and 200-meter dash (22.17).  He also ran a leg on the Bears’ record-setting 4 x 200-meter relay squad (1:29.45).
