CLAREMONT, Calif. -- Bridgewater State University junior Michael McPherson set the school record and earned All-American honors in the shot put at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Claremont Mudd Scripps on Saturday.
McPherson posted a distance of 55 feet, 7.50 inches (16.95 meters) to finish in eighth place at the national championship meet. The Mansfield, Massachusetts native surpassed his own BSU mark of 54 feet, 11.25 inches set earlier this season.
The top eight placewinners in each event at the Division III Championships garner All-American status.
McPherson is the Bears' first track and field All-American since Frank Sherwood placed fifth in the javelin in 1998.
