Bears upset #1 seed Framingham State College in MASCAC Tournament
BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State College men's soccer team will play for the 2007 MASCAC championship and a spot in the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Bears upset top-seeded Framingham State, 2-0, this afternoon in a MASCAC Tournament semifinal game played at Framingham. BSC will take on second seeded Salem State College on Saturday at 1 PM.
FRAMINGHAM, Mass. -- The fourth seeded Bridgewater State men's soccer team traveled to Framingham today to face off against the top seeded Framingham State College Rams in one of the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) semifinals today and defeated the Rams by a score of 2-0.
Bridgewater State (7-10-2) junior defender Jon Machado (Weymouth, MA) broke a scoreless tie in the 42nd minute of play as he took a direct kick from 30 yards out and laced a shot that sailed over the head of Framingham's net minder and into the back of the net for his third goal of the season.
The Bears maintained the slim 1-0 lead thru most of the second half as the Rams (13-4-1) could not capitalize on several quality scoring opportunities and the Bears goalkeeper Ryan Seifert (Ludlow, MA) made three stops on the day.
BSC would add an insurance goal in the 77th minute of play to extend their lead to 2-0 and seal the win. Freshman Mike Fraser (Marshfield, MA) fed the ball to senior midfielder Takashi Suzuki (Tochigi, Japan) , who tallied his third goal of the season.
The Rams finish the season with a school record thirteen wins and will await the announcement of the ECAC New England Men's Soccer Tournament field next Monday. The Bears advance in the tournament to face the winner of the Salem State/Worcester State semifinal, which will be played later tonight, on Saturday in the finals of the MASCAC Men's Soccer Tournament.
