BOSTON, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University sprinters Kiara Abrantes (Somerset, Mass.) and Grace Inacio (Taunton, Mass.) both set school records at the John Thomas Terrier Classic, hosted by Boston University on Friday.
Abrantes, a senior on the Bears' indoor track & field team, broke a school indoor records and was the top Division III runner in a pair of invitational events. The meet featured athletes from all divisions across the country and Canada as well as unattached competitors.
Abrantes was seventh in the 400-meter invitational race with a BSU indoor record time of 55.49 seconds. She was the first Division III runner to cross the finish line. The winner was Boston College senior Sydney Segalla (Salisbury, Conn.).
Abrantes eclipsed her previous indoor standard of 55.78 seconds set last year at the Bruce Lehane Scarlet and White Invitational.
In the 200-meter invite, Abrantes finished 11th with a time of 24.74 seconds and was again the first Division III runner.
Inacio, a sophomore, placed second in the 200-meter open race with a Bears' indoor record of 24.69 seconds. She eclipsed her own indoor standard of 24.94 seconds set back in December at The Mini Meet also at BU.
Inacio trailed only sophomore Abby Dennis (Maywood, N.J.) of Harvard University, who won in 24.64 seconds.
Inacio also took part in the 60-meter dash invite race and was seventh in 7.74 seconds. The winner was Quinnipiac University senior Nyasia Dailey (Middletown, Conn.), who finished in 7.45 seconds.
Senior Naomi Cass (Westport, Mass.) posted a career-best time of 17:24.49 in the 5,000-meter run as she was less than three seconds shy of BSU Hall of Famer Molly Rouillard's school indoor record of 17:22.23 set in 2013. Cass finished 44th out of a field of 102 runners and fourth among Division III harriers.
