Women's Tennis Falls to Wheaton, 6-1

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University women's tennis team lost its first-ever meeting with Wheaton College Wednesday afternoon.

The Lyons took the non-conference match, 6-1, at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts to improve to 1-1.

The Bears, playing their fifth straight home match, are now 2-3.

The lone BSU winner was sophomore Ava Alves (Taunton, Mass.), the No. 6 singles player.

Alves scored a 6-2, 6-4 victory over senior Haylee Doiron (Lowell, Mass.).

Winning at No. 1 singles for the Lyons was senior Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas), 6-3, 6-0, over BSU sophomore Emma Gibney (New Bedford, Mass.).

At No. 2 singles, junior Laila Haraj-Sai (Madison, Conn.) was a 6-4, 6-0 winner over sophomore Aislyn Kelliher (Plymouth, Mass.).

Senior Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas) prevailed at No. 3 singles over sophomore Morgan Smith (Taunton, Mass.), 6-1, 6-1.

Junior Asia-Leigh Hollis (Hamilton, Bermuda) won at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-3, over BSU sophomore Sarah Pothier (Rochester, Mass.).

Freshman Amelie Robinson (Brunswick, Ga.) gave Wheaton a win at No. 5 singles over junior Samantha Bettencourt (Tiverton, R.I.), 6-3, 6-1.

In doubles, the team of Greenlee and Ortiz won at No. 1 over Gibney and Kelliher, 6-1, while Haraj-Sai and Hollis took a 6-3 decision over Smith and Pothier.

Robinson and freshman Lily Runyan (New Milford, Conn.) won at No. 3 doubles over Bettencourt and junior Fiona Clancy (Middleboro, Mass.), 6-2.

The Bears are home again on Saturday at noon, going against Rhode Island College in the Little East Conference.

Wheaton will be at the Grass Courts Doubles Tournament at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, R.I., on Sept. 25.
