SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University wrestling team competed on Saturday at the Doug Parker Invitational hosted by Springfield College.
Sophomore Christian Curley (Bridgewater, Mass.) went 4-1 on the day with three pins and battled back to finish in fifth place.
Competing out of the 197-pound weight class, Curley pinned David Laprade of Williams College in 55 seconds to open the tournament but dropped a tough 4-2 decison to Southern Maine's Anthony Mears in the second round). Following a win by fall over teammate Hayden Garland (Saugus, Mass.) in 14 seconds, Curley notched a 13-9 decision over RIC's Anthony Fernandez. to advance to the fifth place match where he pinned Casey Allen of Springfield College at the 41 second mark of the third period.
The three pins were Curley's first of the season.
Junior Malcolm Chrispin (Hyde Park, Mass.) was the lone Bear to win his first two bouts and advance to the championship quarterfinals. Seeded seventh out of the 141-pound weight class, Chrispin opened with a win by fall (2:37) over Cord Vallis of Trinity College and followed that up with a 14-0 major decision victory against Centenary's Miguel Lopez.
Chrispin dropped a tough 2-1 decision to #2 seed Owen Woolcott of the Coast Guard Academy in the quartfinal round. Woolcott was ranked fourth at 141 in the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Preseason Individual Rankings.
Sophomore Adam Distasio (Hopkinton, Mass.), junior Sei Dolomengi (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) and senior Michael Hopkins (Swampscott, Mass.) all went 3-2 for Bridgewater State.
The 125-pound Distasio went 3-2 with a 12-6 major decision win over Wesleyan's Sebastian Kristal and a decisive 25-8 technical fall against Bavly Mikhail of the UMass Amherst Club Team. Curley picked up a win by medical forfeit.
Dolomengi also competed at 125 and earned a 19-1 technical fall win over Mikhail tp go along with a 7-4 decision against Kristal and a win by fall over Dominic Gangi of New England College. Dolomengi, who has four pins on the season, leads the Bears with nine wins (9-4).
Hopkins notched a pair of technical fall victories over Plymouth State's Robert Tarasuk (18-0) and RIC's Jordan Dacosta (16-1), and added an 8-5 decision over CJ Glaropoulos of Western New England. He dropped a tough 12-11 decision to third-seeded Caden Stout of Coast Guard in the consolation quarterfinals.
Bridgewater finished 12th out of 15 teams in the standings with 33.5 points.
The Bears are off until Friday, December 6th and Saturday, December 7th when they compete at the 53rd Annual Messiah Petrofes Invitational.
