Women's Lacrosse Falls to Washington College in Clearwater, 19-4

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- The Bridgewater State University women's lacrosse team went 0-2 on its spring break trip to the Countryside Sports Complex this week.

The Bears were defeated by Washington College of Maryland, 19-4, on Thursday morning and return home with a 1-5 record.

The Shorewomen (4-2) scored eight times in the second period after holding a 3-2 lead after the opening period.

BSU, whose lost to the Rochester Technology of Institute on Tuesday, was led by sophomore Sophia Fleurent (Fairhaven, Mass.) with a pair of goals. She is second on the team with eight goals.

Also scoring for the Bears were freshman Katie Fitzpatrick (Methuen, Mass.) and senior Meredith Sylvia (Dartmouth, Mass.). Sylvia leads BSU with nine goals while Fitzpatrick scored the second of her career.

Senior Malery Andrews (Ocean City, Md.) led Washington with five goals while junior Elizabeth Braswell (Monroe Township, N.J.) scored four times and had three assists.

Senior Mia Salvatierra (Bel Air, Md.) added four goals and an assist and senior Piper Evans (Chestertown, Md.) scored three times with three assists.

The game was tied, 2-2, midway through the first period as senior Madison Maguire (Sparta, N.J.) and Braswell scored for Washington while Fitzpatrick, assisted by senior Ashley Silva (Rowley, Mass.), and Fleurent, unassisted, scored the BSU goals.

The Shorewomen took a 3-2 lead with 5:37 in the period on a goal by Andrews.

The Bears were outscored, 8-1, in the second period and were down, 11-3, at halftime.

Andrews scored twice in 2:03 of the second period and after a goal by Evans, Braswell scored two goals in 1:19.

Andrews and Salvatierra scored just over a minute apart before Fleurent was assisted by sophomore Taylor Carter (East Walpole, Mass.) for a BSU goal.

Salvatierra finished the first-half scoring with just 15 seconds left.

Washington outscored BSU, 5-0, in the third period, getting two goals each from Salvatierra and Evans and one by Braswell for a 16-3 lead.

Senior Peyton Baldwin (Annapolis, Md.), Andrews and freshman Adrianah Petrovich (Telford, Pa.) had goals for the Shorewomen in the final period before Sylvia had an unassisted goal for BSU.

The Bears were outshot, 35-16, had had 20 turnovers while Washington had the edge in groundballs, 21-4. Draw controls were 14-11 in favor of the Shorewomen.

Sophomore goalkeeper Sara Skaff (Lowell, Mass.) started for BSU and had five saves in 30 minutes while junior Gianna Scarpelli (Medford, Mass.) also stopped five shots in 30 minutes.

Washington junior Maddy Kissinger (Sparks, Md.) had four saves in 55:33 while freshman Madi McKew (Earleville, Md.) stopped two shots in the final 4:27.

BSU returns home to play Clarkson University of Potsdam, N.Y., in the first meeting between the programs on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Mazzaferro Field.
