Clancy, Moore Lead Women's Lacrosse to 12-6 Win over MIT

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Sophomore midfielder Taylor Clancy (Braintree, Mass.) netted five goals and sophomore goaltender Victoria Moore (Duxbury, Mass.) turned aside nine shots to lead the Bridgewater State University women's lacrosse team to a 12-6 non-conference victory over visiting MIT on Thursday evening at Swenson Field.

Bridgewater improves to 1-3 with the win, while MIT slides to 0-3.  The victory was the first as the Bears' head coach for 2011 BSU Hall of Fame inductee, Paula Habel.

Clancy also added a game-best five draw controls for Bridgewater, while sophomore attack Melanie Appleman (Hyannis, Mass.) added a pair of markers to go along with an assist.  Junior defender Shelby Farland (Fiskdale, Mass.) chipped in with a goal and an assist, and junior attack Sammi Salverio (Hanson, Mass.) potted a pair of goals.

Sophomore attack Kaitlyn Nealon (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) led the way for the Engineers with a game-high five goals.  Senior midfielder Katie Kauffman (Olney, Md.) added a goal and a team-best four draw controls.  Sophomore netminder Sarah Ritter (The Woodlands, Texas) made seven stops in just under 51 minutes of action.

Bridgewater held a slight 3-2 advantage with 13 minutes remaining in the first half when back-to-back goals from Clancy and freshman defender Samantha Devine (Marshfield, Mass.) staked the Bears to a three-goal cushion.  Nealon and Kauffman sandwiched a pair of goals around a Salverio tally to make the score 6-4 in favor of BSU.  Appleman and Farland closed out the half with consecutive markers to give the hosts an 8-4 advantage at the intermission.

Clancy would score twice over the first six minutes of the second half and added her fifth goal of the evening with 8:08 left to play.  Bridgewater would limit MIT to just two goals over the final 30 minutes as the Bears came away with the 12-6 triumph.

The Engineers held a slight 24-22 edge in shots but struggled with a 1-for-10 showing in free position attempts thanks in part to the outstanding goaltending of Moore.  The Bears, on the other hand, converted five free position shots in seven attempts and won 11 of 19 draws.

In upcoming action, Bridgewater entertains Colby-Sawyer College on Saturday night at six.  MIT hosts Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday afternoon at four.
