Gioiosa's No-Hitter Helps Softball Spit Pair of Games in Myrtle Beach

By Jim Fenton

LITTLE RIVER, S.C. -- In just her second collegiate pitching appearance, Bridgewater State University junior Lily Gioiosa (North Dartmouth, Mass.) tossed a no-hitter for the Bears at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic on Tuesday.

Gioiosa allowed only three base runners as the Bears defeated Lycoming College of Pennsylvania, 7-0, in the second game of a doubleheader Tuesday.

In the opener, BSU allowed an unearned game-tying run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, then lost to Immaculata University of Pennsylvania, 3-2, in eight innings.

The Bears (3-3) are idle on Wednesday and will play two more games on Thursday, facing Penn State Beaver at 11 a.m. and Thiel College of Pennsylvania at 1 p.m.

Game Two: Bridgewater State 7, Lycoming 0

Gioiosa was an infielder the past two seasons for BSU, appearing in 30 games.

In her second pitching assignment (she also threw four innings in the suspended game Lancaster Bible), Gioiosa was in command against the Warriors (2-1).

She allowed two runners in the top of the first on a walk and an error and one in the fourth on a hit by pitch.

Lycoming was retired in order in five of the seven innings by Gioiosa, who had two strikeouts and threw 71 pitchers.

Senior Angelina Lynch (Taunton, Mass.) went 3-for-4 with two RBI for the Bears.

Sophomore Aubrey Carberry (North Dartmouth, Mass.) was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI while senior Ella Staffier (Marshfield, Mass.) added two hits.

BSU opened a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run single up the middle by Carberry, scoring Lynch (infield hit) and junior Makayla Ansell (Menifee, Calif.), who doubled.

The Bears added five runs in the sixth inning.

Carberry doubled and scored on a single by junior Lily Gagnon (East Haven, Conn.).

After an infield hit by Staffier, senior Emily Eastman (Cranston, R.I.) singled in a run.

Lynch drove in two runs with a triple to left and scored on a throwing error.

Game One: Immaculata 3, Bridgewater State 2 (8)

The winning run in the bottom of the eighth scored on a passed ball on a strikeout.

With freshman Jamie Green (Southampton, Pa.) on second to open the inning, senior Carlee Karcher (Maple Shade, N.J.) doubled her to third. Green scored on the passed ball to end the game.

The Mighty Macs held a 1-0 lead in the first inning when sophomore Madison Formica (Gibbstown, N.J.) had an infield hit, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on an error.

BSU tied it in the sixth inning when Lynch tripled to left and scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Sydney Schaefer (Swarthmore, Pa.).

The Bears took a 2-1 lead in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice bunt by Staffier scoring senior Olyvia Mendonca (Taunton, Mass.), who had walked, stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt.

BSU was within one out of the win in the bottom of the seventh.

Sophomore Natalia Donofrio (Oxford, Pa.) had a bunt single, stole two bases and scored on an outfield error with two outs.

Junior Olivia Hargreaves (Weare, N.H.) took the loss, allowing nine hits while striking out seven.

Reliever Aubrey Seider (Philadelphia, Pa.), a sophomore, was the winning pitcher with two innings of work. Freshman Sara Pierson (Wilmington, Del.) struck out five in six innings as the starter.

BSU had four hits with only one single.
