BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Bridgewater State University Associate Vice President for Athletics and Student Wellness, Dr. Marybeth Lamb, announced today that BSU Hall of Famer and former softball standout Carrie (Kuprycz) Consalvi has been named as the head coach of the Bears’ softball team. Consalvi replaces Lindsey Couturier who resigned following the 2022 season to focus on her work in external relations.
“We are so excited to have Carrie come back home to BSU to lead our Bears," said Lamb. "Carrie not only has the expertise, but she is a member of the family and understands what being a “Bear” means to our students, our faculty, staff and alumni. This will be an exciting time for Bears softball."
Consalvi was an outstanding catcher and designated player for the Bears from 1998 to 2000. In 130 career games, Carrie batted .387 (146-377) with 38 doubles, nine triples, 21 home runs and 23 stolen bases to go along with 107 runs scored, 122 runs batted in, a .703 slugging percentage and a .488 on-base percentage. She ranks fifth all-time in program history in batting average and her .535 on-base percentage in 1999 ranks fourth.
Consalvi helped the Bears capture three straight MASCAC championships and make three consecutive NCAA DIII Tournament appearances during her career. The team won the New England Regional championship and advanced to the DIII World Series in both 1998 and 1999. All told, the Bears posted a record of 109-30-1 (.782) from 1998 to 2000 including a 40-2 (.952) record versus MASCAC opponents.
For her outstanding performance on the softball diamond, Carrie garnered All-MASCAC First Team accolades and was named to the NFCA All-New England First Team in each of her three seasons. She was also selected to the ECAC Division III New England All-Star Team and was an NFCA Division III Second Team All-American in both 1998 and 1999.
Consalvi graduated from Bridgewater State in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science degree in athletic training. She also earned a Master of Science in nursing from UMass Dartmouth in 2013. Carrie is currently a certified nurse practitioner in cardiology on Cape Cod. She presently resides in Sandwich, Massachusetts with her husband, Dave (a 2000 alum), and daughter, Mia.
“I am excited and honored to return to what I feel like is home to me,” said Consalvi. “To come home and represent the Bear family once again is a longtime dream come true.
“I cannot wait to get to work,” Consalvi added, “and look forward to a successful and competitive 2023 season.”
Prior to taking over the reins of the BSU softball program, Carrie served as the head varsity softball coach at Taunton High School for three seasons, guiding the Tigers to back-to-back Massachusetts Division I state titles as well as an undefeated season in 2021.
Consalvi also spent one season (1996) coaching JV softball at her high school alma mater, Quabbin Regional, and was an assistant coach for two seasons at Bridgewater State in 2003 and 2004.
Carrie is member of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and holds certifications in ACE/Safe Sport, Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and Cardiac Advanced Life Support (CALS).
In five seasons at the helm, Couturier guided the BSU softball team to an overall record of 82-75-2 including a 46-10-1 mark against MASCAC teams. The Bears won or shared a pair of conference regular season titles (2019, 2022), captured the 2021 MASCAC Tournament championship and also advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament in 2021.
“I am so grateful to Lindsey for leading our team these last few years," Lamb added. "She has built a strong foundation for this team including MASCAC championships and NCAA tournament appearances."
