Men's Track & Field Competes at Tufts Sunshine Classic

MEDFORD, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University men's outdoor track & field team competed on Saturday at the Tufts Sunshine Classic.

Sophomore Chigozie Adigwe (Lowell, Mass.) placed second in the finals of the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.90 seconds. Adigwe, who qualified for the NEICAAA Championships in the hurdles, also recorded a season-best time of 14.82 seconds in the preliminaries as he currently ranks 35th in all of Division III in the event.

Graduate student Jacob DeAndrade (Taunton, Mass.) placed second in the finals of the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.90 seconds. DeAndrade also finished second in the 200-meter dash with a season-best time of 22.24 seconds.

Senior Mason Matias (New Bedford, Mass.) placed fourth in both the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash as he recorded collegiate-best times in both events. Matias ran the finals of the 100 in 11.09 seconds and posted a time of 22.38 seconds in the 200.

The foursome of DeAndrade, Matias, junior Michael Young (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and sophomore Nathan Candido (Taunton, Mass.) captured top honors in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 43.00 seconds.

Sophomore Kevin McBirney (East Bridgewater, Mass.) was the first to cross the finish line in the 800-meter run as he posted a time of 1:57.96. McBirney also ran a leg on the Bears' first place 4x400-meter relay along with classmate Stephen Spofford (Chelmsford, Mass.) and freshmen Chris Beaulieu (Monson, Mass.) and Michael Neitlich (Middleboro, Mass.).

Neitlich added a third-place showing in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 57.52 seconds.

Beaulieu finished second in the long jump with a collegiate-best leap of 21 feet, 11.75 inches (6.70m).

Junior Jason Dann (Reading, Mass.) placed second in the discus with collegiate-best toss of 138 feet, one inch (42.10m) and finished fourth in the hammer throw with a distance of 155 feet, ten inches (47.49m).

Junior Thomas Barinelli (Tewksbury, Mass.) was fifth in the finals of the 110-meter hurdles (15.76). He also posted a preliminary time of 15.67 seconds.

The Bears finished second at the meet with a team score of 151 points. The host Jumbos placed first with 273 points.

The BSU men's track & field team will compete next Saturday at the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Outdoor Championships hosted by Fitchburg State University. The Bears are the four-time defending champions.
