Jaren Alves Named MASCAC Football Defensive Player of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Bridgewater State University senior cornerback Jaren Alves has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Football Defensive Player of the Week.

Alves recorded a career-high three interceptions to go along with four tackles (one solo) and a pass breakup in the Bears’ 40- 27 MASCAC win on the road over Western Connecticut State University. The Bears turned his first two interceptions into points on a touchdown and field goal. Alves fourth quarter interception helped fend off the Wolves comeback bid.

Through four games this season, Alves has three interceptions to go along with 16 tackles (11 solo) with one tackle for loss and a pass breakup. The East Providence, Rhode Island native currently leads the MASCAC in interceptions.

In 35 games over four seasons with the Bears, Alves has recorded eight interceptions, including one for a touchdown, as well as 104 tackles (70 solo), 5.5 tackles for loss, 38 passes defended and one forced fumble.

The MASCAC Defensive Player of the Week distinction marks the first of Alves’ career.

The BSU football team is currently 1-3 on the season and 1-1 in the MASCAC. The Bears welcome Fitchburg State University to Swenson Field on Saturday for Homecoming. Kickoff is slated for four o’clock.
