Baseball Sweeps Fitchburg State in MASCAC Twinbill

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University baseball combined for 27 runs and 27 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Fitchburg State University Saturday afternoon.

The Bears scored nine times in the sixth inning in the opener, a 13-0 rout of the Falcons, then scored eight runs in the first inning on the way to a 14-3 victory in the second game at Alumni Park.

BSU, which defeated Fitchburg State on Friday in the series opener, improved to 8-5 and 3-1 in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference.

The Bears have won 10 straight against the Falcons (3-13, 1-3 conference) and 16 of the last 17 meetings.

Game One: Bridgewater State 13, Fitchburg State 0

Senior Trey Yesu (Monson, Mass.) picked up his first win in four decisions this season, giving up four hits and striking out three.

Senior Joshua Selander (Granby, Conn.) went 3-for-3 with two RBI while junior Rylan Secovich (Southwick, Mass.) was 3-for-4 for the Bears. Senior Danny Jasmin (East Meadow, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 as part of a 13-hit attack.

BSU took a 2-0 lead in the first on an RBI double down the line in right by Selander and a sacrifice fly to center by junior Benjamin Sepeck (Whitman, Mass.).

The Bears went up, 3-0, in the third on an RBI single through the left side by Selander and made it 4-0 in the fifth on a run-scoring single through the left side by senior DJ Prampin (Worcester, Mass.).

BSU then posted nine runs in the sixth.

Sophomore Cam Beltramini (Hanson, Mass.) hit a three-run homer to left, scoring junior Logan Petrosino (Beverly, Mass.), who had walked, and Secovich, who had singled.

Selander then singled and pinch hitter Wyatt Yeatter (Wimberley, Texas), a freshman, doubled to right.

Jasmin brought in a run with an infield hit and Petrosino tripled to right for three runs. The last runs of the inning came when freshman Dominick Zuliani (Groton, Conn.) doubled to right center for an RBI and later scored on a wild pitch.

Game Two: Bridgewater State 14, Fitchburg State 3

Eleven players had at least one hit for BSU with Secovich, senior Ryan Flaherty (Duxbury, Mass.) and Selander getting two apiece. Secovich extended his season-long hitting streak to 13 games with a base hit his second time up in the bottom of the first when the Bears sent 12 batters to the plate.

Junior Jaden Arruda (Seekonk, Mass.) was the winning pitcher and is 1-0 after giving up three hits in three innings.

The Bears put the game away with the eight runs in the first, needing just four hits.

Secovich walked, stole second and advanced on a wild pitch with Beltramini getting hit by a pitch.

A single by Flaherty and a sacrfice fly by Selander made it 2-0.

After junior Benjamin Sepeck (Whitman, Mass.) was hit by a pitch, sophomore Jamie Luna (Warwick, R.I.) hit a three-run homer to left for a 5-0 edge.

Prampin was hit by a pitch and advanced on a stole base and wild pitch before scoring on a groundout. Beltramini finished the scoring in the first with a a two-run single through the left side.

The lead went to 11-0 in the second with Prampin hitting a three-run homer after Luna reached on a fielder's choice and Selander singled.

In the third, BSU scored twice with junior Benjamin Sepeck (Whitman, Mass.) bringing one home on a fielder's choice and freshman Nick Berube (Swampscott, Mass.) adding an RBI hit.

BSU's last run was in the fourth as sophomore Zackary Casey (Leominster, Mass.) had an RBI single to left.

Fitchburg State scored three runs in the fifth with senior Casey Bellew (Beverly, Mass.) drawing a bases-loaded walk and junior Liam Currier (Charlestown, R.I.) adding a two-run single.

BSU will travel to the Massachusetts Maritime Academy for a doubleheader at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

Fitchburg State is at Westfield State for a 1 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday.
