Women's Tennis Competes at Grass Court Doubles Championships

NEWPORT, R.I. -- The Bridgewater State University women's tennis team competed on Thursday afternoon at the 38th Annual Grass Court Doubles Championships held at the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

The Bears' Flight A tandem of sophomores Aislyn Kelliher (Plymouth, Mass.) and Morgan Smith (Taunton, Mass.) went 1-1 on the afternoon with a 6-5 (7-4) quarterfinal round win over their opponents from Salve Regina University.

The Flight B pairing of sophomores Emma Gibney (New Bedford, Mass.) and Sarah Pothier (Rochester, Mass.) also finished 1-1 at the tournament including a 6-5 (7-4) victory in the quarterfinals over Gordon.

The Bears had two doubles teams competing in the Flight C bracket with the sophomore pairing of Ava Alves (Taunton, Mass.) and Grace Binegar (Norton, Mass.) posting a 1-1 mark with a 6-3 quarterfinal round win against Gordon. Alves and Binegar were competing in doubles play for the first time in their respective collegiate careers while Binegar was also making her season debut. Juniors Samantha Bettencourt (Tiverton, R.I.) and Fiona Clancy (Middleboro, Mass.) went 0-2 in Flight C.

Bridgewater State tied for fifth place in the team standings with four points. Roger Williams captured the team title with 12 points.

In upcoming action, the Bears entertain Little East Conference (LEC) foe Western Connecticut State University on Friday afternoon at three o'clock..
