Three Bears Named to NWCA Scholar All-American Team

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Three members of the Bridgewater State University wrestling program have earned a spot on the 2025-2026 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division III Scholar All-American Team.

Reprsenting Bridgewater State are senior Malcolm Chrispin, junior Christian Curley and freshman Avery Carl. Curley is making his second straight appearance on the NWCA Division III Scholar All-American Team while Chrispin and Carl are first time honorees.

To earn NWCA Scholar All-American honors, nominees must have an average GPA of 3.2 (on a 4.0 scale) over the last two semesters or last 3 trimesters, or have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 (on a 4.0 scale). On the competition side, wrestlers have to place in the top eight at an NCAA regional tournament or compete in a at least 15 matches and have a win percentage greater than 66%.

A native of Hyde Park, Massachusetts, Chrispin posted a record of 18-12 (.600) this season with a pair of pins and 30 takedowns to go along with 48 near fall points and 20 escapes. 

Chrispin placed seventh in the 141-pound weight class to earn All-Region One honors at the NCAA Division III Region One Tournament held at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy on February 28th and March ast.

In three seasons with the Bears, Chrispin notched an overall record of 58-33 (.637) with five career pins, 130 takedowns, 177 near fall points and 52 escapes.

In the classroom, Chrispin currently sports a cumulative 3.29 grade point average. He is slated to graduate following the 2026 spring semester with a degree in health science (pre-physical therapy concentration).

Curley, who hails from Bridgewater, Massachusetts, posted a record of 22-11 (.667) this season competing out of the 197-pound weight class with 12 pins as well as 39 takedowns, 43 near fall points and 20 escapes.

Over his first three seasons at BSU, Curley is 52-36 (.591) with 29 pins, 95 takedowns, 74 near fall points and 79 escapes.

In the classroom, Curley presently sports an impressive 3.921 GPA and is majoring in cybersecurity and digital forensics.

Carl made an immediate impact in his rookie campaign. The Bridport, Vermont product went 24-18 (.571) with 17 pins, 38 takedowns, 38 near fall points and 48 escapes. He led the Bears in both pins and escapes. The 17 pins marked the fourth highest single-season total in program history.

At the NCAA Division III Region One Tournament, Carl placed fourth out of the 157-pound weight class to garner All-Region One accolades. He is the Bears' first true freshman to earn all-region honors since Ryan Cassidy in 2012.

In the classroom, Carl checks in with a 3.567 GPA and is majoring in management.

A total of 473 student-athletes representing 105 institutions from around the Division III landscape were recognized for their academic success in the classroom while competing throughout the season.
