PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Bridgewater State University wrestling team competed on Saturday at the Wildcat Open hosted by Johnson & Wales University.
Freshman Avery Carl (Bridport, Vt.) paced the Bears with four wins on the day, all by fall. Carl went 4-2 out of the 157-weight class as he increased his team-leading total to 14 pins. He is also second on the team in wins with 18 wins.
Head Coach Frank Cammisa hold the Bears' rookie record with 21 pins during the 2006-2007 season.
Carl opened the day with a win by fall (2:44)) over Antonio Jimenez of Sacred Heart University. Following a technical fall setback to Coast Guard's Joey Miranda, Carl bounced back with three straight pins over RPI's Arcangelo Losee (2:13), Derek McMahon (2:02) of Springfield Tech and Jason Glicksman (0:59) of Roger Williams. Kyle Csikari of Coast Guard would end the run with a 4-1 decision.
Junior Christian Curley (Bridgewater, Mass.) went 3-2 out of the 197-pound weight class.
Curley posted a 21-4 (2:32) technical fall win over Ryan Eplite of Springfield Tech in his opener but dropped a 10-2 major decision to Brendan Raley of Coast Guard. He responded with back-to-back pins of Johnson and Wales' John Bettencourt (4:14) and Coast Guard's Abe Al-Khalili (4:02) before losing by decision, 7-0, to JWU's Anthony Fernandez. Fernandez was ranked sixth in the most recent NCWA Region One Rankings while Curley was seventh.
Curley is now 16-8 on the season with nine pins.
Freshman Ethan Buonanducci (Enfield, Conn.) picked up a 20-3 (1:30) technical fall victory against RWU's Don Hickey and recorded a 11-7 decision over Jason Gugliotta of Coast Guard in his first two bouts of the day competing out of the 133-pound weight class. Buonanducci, who leads the Bears with 24 wins, dropped a tough 2-1 decision to Castleton's Aidan Shufelt in the quarterfinals. He did not compete in his next bout in the consolation round.
The Bears return to the mat next Saturday when they head to Roger Wiliams for a tri-match with the host Hawks and the Panthers of Plymouth State.
