Chrispin, Buonanducci Lead Wrestling at Day One of Messiah Petrofes Invitational

GRANTHAM, Pa. -- Two Bridgewater State University wrestlers have advanced to the semifinal round of the 54th Messiah Petrofes Invitational.

Senior Malcolm Chrispin (Hyde Park, Mass.) and freshman Ethan Buonanducci (Endfield, Conn.) were undefeated on the first day of the two-day tournament at Messiah University's Jordan Court in Hitchcock Arena Friday.

Chrispin and Buonanducci will have semifinal-round matches when the 15-team tournament resumes on Saturday at 9:00 a.m.

BSU and Springfield College are the lone New England teams in the tournament.

Chrispin, seeded sixth at 141 pounds, defeated Cole Riedel of Adrian College of Michigan by decision, 6-3, and stopped Wyatt Parker of Averett University of Virginia by decision, 6-0.

In the quarterfinal round, Chrispin won by decision again, defeating #3 seed Brendan Callahan of Gettysburg College of Pennsylvania, 8-2.

Chrispin will go against second-seeded Issac Quiles of Springfield in the semifinal round. Quiles is ranked sixth in both the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division III Region One and New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) individual rankings for the 141-pound weight class.

Buonanducci, at 133 pounds, won by a 3-2 decision over Peyton Reese of Gettysburg and picked up an 11-6 decision over #4 seed Logan Connolly of Saint Vincent College of Pennsylvania.

In the quarterfinal round, Buonanducci won a major decision over fifth-seeded Tyler Rutledge of Messiah, 10-1.

Buonanducci will go against top-seeded and nationally ranked Jacob Venezia of New York University in the semifinal round.

Junior Christian Curley (Bridgewater, Mass.) also advanced to Saturday.

Seeded fourth in the 197-pound weight class, Curley started the tournament with a 17-4 major decision over Isaiah Durham of Messiah.

Curley was then defeated by #5 seed Phil Nave of Gettysburg by fall at 3:19. He will take on Aidan Murray of Arcadia in the consolation round on Saturday morning.

BSU junior Cqari Bacote (Springfield, Mass.) went 4-2 out of the 149-pound weight class, ending with a loss by fall at 1:28 to second-seeded Dalton Monger of Messiah.

Bacote started with a win by fall at 2:27 over Jay Lenio of Muhlenberg College of Pennsylvania, then posted a 7-5 decision against Abel Brunk of Messiah.

Following an 18-7 major decision setback to #3 seed Andy Orlandini of Saint Vincent, Bacote bounced back with a 51-second pin of Tyler Glazier of Arcadia University of Pennsylvania and a 13-4 major decision over Dylan Hart of Messiah.

Bears freshman Avery Carl (Bridport, Vt.) went 3-2 on the day competing at 157.

Carl had wins over Charles Levine of Muhlenberg by decision, 10-7, Logan Hurwitt of Muhlenberg by fall at 2:04 and Marco Conroy of Arcadia by fall at 4:53. His first loss was to top-seeded Aiden Smith of Adrian by fall at 1:32 in the second round.

Carl was eliminated by #5 seed Noah Rice of Messiah by fall at 1:14.

Another BSU freshman, Kamel Dib (Lincoln, R.I.) posted a 3-2 mark wrestling out of the 149-pound bracket.

Dib started with a 7-3 decision win over Horacio Bowen of Averett, then lost to the #2 seed Monger by fall at 2:51.

Dib rebounded with a pair of decision over Daniel Pierce of Messiah, 7-2, and Blaise Kokkales of Adrian, 5-4, before dropping a 9-4 decision to #6 seed Ty Stewart of Springfield.

Three BSU wrestlers went 2-2, including sophomore James Calabrese (Foxborough, Mass.) at 157, freshman Miguel Arcila Londono (Salem, Mass.) at 157 and junior heavyweight Michael Mastroianni (Milford, Mass.).
