PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Sixteen members of the Bridgewater State University wrestling team competed on Saturday at the Wildcat Open hosted by Johnson & Wales University.
Senior Amauris Gomez (Lawrence, Mass.) was the lone BSU grappler with multiple wins as he went 2-2 out of the 184-pound weight class. Gomez recorded a win by fall (6:29) over Roel Johnson of Rhode Island College and added a 10-5 decision against Stivan Kalchev who was competing unattached.
Sophomore Joseph Cahill (Fountain Hills, Ariz.), freshmen Kyle Rhoton (North Andover, Mass.) and Owen Menendez (Marlborough, Mass.), sophomore Benjamin Hankinson (Braintree, Mass.) and junior Hayden Garland (Saugus, Mass.) each went 1-2 on the day. Cahill wrestled at 133, while Rhoton, Menendez and Hankinson competed at 141, and Garland at 197.
The BSU wrestling team will be back in action on Sunday as the Bears will take part in the annual New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Dual Meet Tourament also hosted by Johnson & Wales. Bridgewater is seeded 16th and will take on the top-seeded Wildcats in opening round action.
