BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University sophomore midfielder Sophia Fleurent has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week.

A native of Fairhaven, Massachusetts, Fleurent forced nine turnovers and notched 22 draw controls to go along with six ground balls over the Bears’ first three games of the season. She also scored four goals and dished out a pair of assists for six points.

Fleurent tallied three caused turnovers and seven draw controls, including the 100th of her career, to go along with a pair of goals and an assist in an 11-9 win on the road over the University of New England. She also registered three caused turnovers, eight draw controls and two ground balls in a 9-8 victory over Salve Regina; and three caused turnovers, seven draw controls, four ground balls, two goals and an assist in an 18-9 season-opening loss to Wheaton.

In 20 games over her first two seasons with the Bears, Fleurent has amassed 106 draw controls, 14 ground balls and ten caused turnovers as well as nine goals and two assists.

The MASCAC Defensive Players of the Week honor marks the first of Fleurent's career.

The BSU women's lacrosse team is currently 1-2 on the season. The Bears host the University of Southern Maine on Friday afternoon at four o'clock.
