BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University women's lacrosse team dropped a 22-5 decision to Clarkson University on Tuesday afternoon at Mazzaferro Field.
The visiting Golden Knights, members of the Liberty League, improve to 6-1 on the season with their sixth consecutive win. The Bears fall to 1-6 with their fourth straight setback.
Clarkson scored the first eight goals of the contest and led 10-1 after the first quarter and 15-4 at the intermission. The Golden Knights outscored the Bears 7-1 in the second half.
Junior Gabby Cranfield (Cortland, N.Y.) paced Clarkson with three goals and five assists. Cranfield now has a team-leading 19 goals and 24 assists on the season for 43 points.
Freshman Karli Scherpf (Kensington, N.H.) added five goals and a helper for the Golden Knights while junior Makenna Cassin (Granby, Conn.) scored four goals and senior Sydney Nakas (Penfield, N.Y.) notched two goals and five assists.
Senior Meredith Sylvia (South Dartmouth, Mass.) led the way for Bridgewater State with four goals. The Bears also received a goal and two assists from sophomore Taylor Carter (East Walpole, Mass.).
The Golden Knights outshot the Bears by a decided margin of 39-10 and finished with a 17-5 advantage in ground balls as well as a slight 15-13 edge in draw controls.
The Clarkson defense forced 18 turnovers, and the Golden Knights committed just five miscues and were a perfect 13-for-13 on clear attempts. The Bears went 7-for-15 on the clear.
Neither team converted off the free position. Clarkson went 0-for-4 while Bridgewater missed on two attempts.
Junior Riley Donovan (Delmar, N.Y.) played the first half between the pipes for the Golden Knights and made one save. Senior Jennaca McGill (Dexter, N.Y.) came on to start the second half and turned aside three shots in 30 minutes of action.
Three BSU keeper combined for 11 saves with sophomore Sara Skaff (Lowell, Mass.) turning aside seven shots over the first two periods.
BSU sophomore Sophia Fleurent (Fairhaven, Mass.) recorded six draw controls while Sylvia added five. Scherpf tallied six draw controls for the Golden Knights with Cassin checking in with four.
In upcoming action, the Bears host UMass Dartmouth next Tuesday evening at six o'clock. The Golden Knights entertain William Smith College on Friday afternoon at four o'clock. Williams Smith is ranked eighth in the most recent Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division III Poll.
