MIDDLETOWN, R.I. -- Junior Jenny Jones (Framingham, Mass.) scored seven goals and senior Shannon Manning (Framingham, Mass.) added five tallies to lead the Bridgewater State College women's lacrosse team to a 19-9 win over Salve Regina University in non-conference women's lacrosse action Tuesday evening at Gaudet Field in Middletown.
Junior Patricia Maloney (Walpole, Mass.) added two goals and two assists for the Bears, who improved to 2-1 on the season and 11-1 all-time against Salve Regina. Senior Sarah Baker (Summit, N.J.) tallied five times for the Seahawks, who slipped to 0-2.
The Bears raced out to a 7-1 lead behind a pair of goals from both Jones and Maloney and built a 9-3 halftime lead. The visitors outshot the Seahawks 17-14 in the first half, converted on three of their five free positions attempts, and collected 14 ground balls to nine for Salve Regina.
Bridgewater State scored the first three goals and four of the first five of the second half to grab a 13-4 advantage with just under 23 minutes remaining, and the lead never dipped below seven goals. The Bears finished the contest outshooting SRU 38-30.
Freshman Kelly Burke (Georgetown, Mass.) recorded a goal and two assists for the Seahawks while sophomore Sarah Livingston (Westford, Mass.) notched a pair of goals. Freshman Danielle Malconian (Belmont, Mass.) played a strong game defensively for the Seahawks, collecting four ground balls and three draw controls, and also caused a pair of turnovers.
For Bridgewater, senior Katie DeMaio (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) and sophomore Kristin White (Pelham, Mass.) each recorded a pair of goals while Jones tallied a team-high four ground balls. Freshman Michelle Navoni (Mansfield, MA) paced the Bears defensively with three caused turnovers, two ground balls and two draw controls while also recording a pair of assists. Senior netminder Meghan Griffin (Billerica, Mass.) turned aside six shots to pick up her second win of the season.
The Seahawks host the Colby-Sawyer Chargers this Saturday at Gaudet Field at 1 p.m. The Bears host Wellesley Thursday at 4 p.m.
