Shelly DePina Selected to NEWBA Senior All-Star Classic

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Bridgewater State University senior forward Shelly DePina has been selected to compete in the New England Women’s Basketball Association (NEWBA) Senior All-Star Classic on Saturday, March 24th (1:00 PM) at Western New England University.

DePina wrapped up an outstanding four-year career at Bridgewater State as she helped lead the Bears to their second straight Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Tournament championship and NCAA Division III Tournament appearance.

The New Bedford, Massachusetts native averaged 14.7 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2.1 steals and 1.6 blocked shots in 27 games this season, while shooting 43% (143-33) from the floor, 71% (73-103) at the free throw line and 33% (38-117) from three-point range.

DePina, who is one of only two players from the MASCAC voted to the all-star game, finished second in the conference in blocks, fourth in three-point shooting and fifth in scoring.  She is also sixth in field goal percentage, seventh in made three-pointers, ninth in steals and tenth in rebounding.

In 101 games over four seasons with the Bears, DePina amassed 1,162 points, 698 rebounds, 101 assists, 93 blocks and 196 steals.  She ranks fourth all-time at BSU in scoring and third in rebounds.

The NEWBA Senior All-Star Classic has become a great tradition and a memorable way for many seniors to finish their collegiate careers.  Players from around the region are nominated for the honor by their coaches and Sports Information Directors. Coaches then select the 22 participants through a vote. Rosters will be announced at a later date.
