DePina Named MASCAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Bridgewater State University senior forward Shelly DePina has been named the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week.

The Most Valuable Player of the MASCAC Tournament, DePina averaged 23.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.0 blocks and 2.5 steals in two games during the Bears conference title run while shooting 72% (18-25) from the field and 71% (5-7) from three-point range.

DePina notched a career-high 28 points on 10 of 15 shooting to go along with seven boards and three blocks in Bridgewater’s 76-66 championship game victory over MCLA.  The New Bedford, Massachusetts native added 18 points, three rebounds, a pair of assists and four steals  in a 74-59 semifinal triumph over Worcester State.  She knocked down 8 of 10 field goal attempts in the win over the Lancers.

In 26 games this season, DePina is averaging 14.5 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2.1 steals and 1.7 blocks per game while shooting 44% (136-312) from the floor, 71% (72-101) at the charity stripe and 32% (34-108) from behind the arc.  She currently ranks second in the MASCAC in blocks, sixth in scoring, field goal percentage and three-point shooting, eighth in made trifectas and tenth in rebounding.

In 100 games over four seasons with the Bears, DePina has amassed 1,143 points, 692 rebounds, 100 assists, 92 blocks and 193 steals.  She is fifth all-time at BSU in scoring and third in rebounds.

The Bridgewater State women’s basketball team is presently 19-7 on the season.  The Bears advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament by virtue of capturing the MASCAC Tournament championship for the third time in the last five years.  BSU will take on Babson College in NCAA first round play on Friday evening at Amherst College.
