Six Bears Headed to NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Six members of the Bridgewater State University track & field teams will be competing next week at the 2025 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

The national championship meet will be held on Thursday, May 22nd, Friday, May 23rd and Saturday, May 24th at the Spire Institute & Academy in Geneva, Ohio.

Graduate student Corey Stalters is the lone member of the BSU men's track & field team to earn a spot at the outdoor championships. Stalters qualified in the javelin.

Graduate students Jailene Escalera (Rockland, Mass.) and Alison McDonough (Halifax, Mass.); seniors Kiara Abrantes (Somerset, Mass.) and Serenity Sands (East Bridgewater, Mass.); and freshman Grace Inacio (Taunton, Mass.) will represent the BSU women's track & field team at the national championship meet.

McDonough qualified in the 100-meter hurdles, Abrantes in the 400-meter dash and Sands in the high jump. McDonough, Abrantes, Escalera and Inacio qualified in the 4x100-meter relay as the foursome is the first BSU women's relay team to qualify for the NCAA championships. 

A native of Norton, Massachusetts, Stalters is seeded second in the javelin with a school record and qualifying mark of 226 feet, two inches (68.94m) which he recorded at the Division III New England Championships on May 2nd.

McDonough is tied for 16th in the 100 hurdles. The Halifax, Massachusetts product posted her qualifying time of 14.16 seconds yesterday (May 15) at the MIT Final Qualifier.

Abrantes checks in at 21st in the 400. The Somerset, Massachusetts native recorded her school record and qualifying time of 55.35 seconds at the Division III New England Championships on May 3rd.

Sands, who hails from East Bridgewater, Massachusetts, is tied for third in the high jump. Sands notched her qualifying leap of five feet, 7.75 inches (1.72m) at the NEICAAA Championships on May 10th.

The Bears' relay squad of McDonough, Abrantes, Inacio and Escalera set the school record in the 4x100 with a time of 46.58 seconds yesterday at the MIT Final Qualifier to earn a spot at the NCAAs.

Stalters is heading to the outdoor championships for a fourth straight season. He earned First Team All-American honors in the javelin in 2022 and 2024.

McDonough is making her third straight appearance at the national outdoor track & field championships. She also competed in the 60-meter hurdles at the DIII Indoor Track & Field Championships in 2022, 2024 and 2025.

Abrantes is making her second NCAA appearance and first at the outdoor championships.

Sands, a two-time First Team All-American in the indoor high jump, is competing at the outdoor championships for the fourth straight year.

Escalera and Inacio are making their debuts at the national championship meet.

The preliminaries of the women's 4x100 relay is booked for Thursday afternoon at 5:25 PM with the finals on Saturday afternoon at 1:15 PM.

The men's javelin will get underway on Thursday afternoon at 5:45 PM.

The women's high jump is scheduled for Friday morning at 11:30 AM.

The preliminary race of the women's 100-meter hurdles is slated to take place on Friday afternoon at 2:30 PM with the finals scheduled for Saturday afternoon at 2:00 PM.

The preliminary race of the women's 400-meter dash is lined up for Friday afternoon at 3:15 PM with the finals on Saturday afternoon at 2:20 PM.

For each individual event contested, including the decathlon and heptathlon, the top 22 declared student-athletes were accepted into the competition. For each relay event contested, the top 16 declared relay teams, one per institution, were accepted into the competition.
