Barinelli Leads Men’s Track & Field at Silfen Invitational

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Junior Thomas Barinelli (Tewksbury, Mass.) captured top honors in the long jump to lead the Bridgewater State University men's outdoor track & field team during day one of the Silfen Invitational hosted by Connecticut College on Friday at the Silfen Field and Track.

Barinelli posted a season-best mark of 22 feet, eight inches (6.91m) in the long jump as he edged teammate Blake Kerwin (Rehoboth, Mass.). Kerwin placed second in the event with a career-best leap of 22 feet, 7.5 inches (6.90m). Both Barinelli and Kerwin recorded qualifying marks for both the Division III New England Championships and NEICAAA Championships.

Sophomore Kevin McBirney (East Bridgewater, Mass.) placed eighth in the 1,500-meter run with a career-best and DIII New Englands qualifying time of 3:59.56.

Senior Corey Stalters (Norton, Mass.) and junior Jason Dann (Reading, Mass.) placed sixth and eighth, respectively, in the discus throw. Stalters recorded a DIII New Englands qualifying mark of 132 feet, ten inches (40.50m), while Dann posted a distance of 128 feet, ten inches (39.03m).

Sophomore Leo Lopez (Haverhill, Mass.) and graduate student Tom O'Brien (Wrentham, Mass.) also competed in the discus as they finished 13th (116'8"/35.56m) and 24th (102'8"/31.31m), respectively.

Sophomore Kenny Goodwin (Chelmsford, Mass.), junior Sam Steere (West Kingston, R.I.), freshman Kyle Ackroyd (Charlestown, R.I.), senior Ryan Goldman (Franklin, Mass.) and freshman Alexavier Almeida (North Attleboro, Mass.) all competed in distance events at the meet on Friday. Goodwin in the 1,500-meter run (22nd, 4:17.18), Steere in the 5,000-meter run (20th, 15:51.70) and the trio of Ackroyd (19th, 33:48.48), Goldman (20th, 33:49.41) and Almeida (27th, 35:32.93) in the 10,000-meter run. Goodwin, Steere, Ackroyd and Goldman notched career-best times in their respective events.

The Silfen Invitational continues on Saturday with field events getting underway at 8:00 AM and the gun sounding for track events at 9:45.
