BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – For the third time this season, Bridgewater State University junior Michael McPherson has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week. McPherson shares the weekly honor along with Westfield State junior Tom Gauger.
McPherson helped the Bears capture the MASCAC team outdoor title as he posted a first place finish in the shot put with a distance of 50 feet, 8.75 inches (15.82 meters). The Mansfield, Massachusetts native also earned a third place showing in the hammer throw with a toss of 156 feet, 9.00 inches (47.77 meters), and finished sixth in the discus checking in at 134 feet, 3.00 inches (40.92 meters).
Earlier this season, McPherson eclipsed the BSU outdoor marks in both the shot put (52’0.50”) and hammer throw (170’8.00”) at the season-opening BSU Bears Invitational. He qualified for three postseason meets (DIII New Englands, ECAC & NEICAAA) in each event.
McPherson also holds the Bears’ indoor shot put mark with a distance of 50 feet, 11.50 inches. He broke the record four times this past winter capped off by an All-ECAC performance at the ECAC Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships.
The outdoor season continues for McPherson and other qualifying members of the BSU track and field teams on Friday and Saturday as the Bears compete at the New England Division III Championships hosted by MIT.
