BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University junior Michael McPherson has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week.
McPherson eclipsed a pair of school throwing records to lead the men’s track and field team at the BSU Bears Invitational on Saturday. He broke the outdoor marks in both the shot put and the hammer throw while also placing first and qualifying for three postseason meets (DIII New Englands, ECAC & NEICAAA) in each event.
McPherson, who hails from Mansfield, Massachusetts, posted a distance of 52 feet, 0.5 inches (15.86 meters) in the shot put to better the previous school standard of 49 feet, 5.5 inches set by Tom Hilse in 1980. McPherson tossed the hammer 170 feet, eight inches (52.02 meters) to surpass Dave Mackiewicz's 2001 record of 166 feet, three inches.
In addition to his outdoor records, McPherson also holds the Bears’ indoor shot put mark with a distance of 50 feet, 11.50 inches. He broke the record four times this past winter capped off by an All-ECAC performance at the ECAC Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships.
The outdoor season will resume this weekend for McPherson and the BSU track and field teams. The Bears will compete at the Tufts Snowflake Classic on Saturday beginning at 10:00 AM.
