BOSTON, Mass. – The visiting Bridgewater State University men's tennis team defeated Wheelock College, 9-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Winsor Courts. The host Wildcats are now 2-5, while the Bears improve to 6-4.
Bridgewater State began the day with three doubles victories, including senior David Campbell (Vineyard Haven, MA) and junior Mike Zagame (Uxbridge, MA) downing Wheelock's No. 1 tandem of senior Wilson Chang (Lee, MA) and junior Bobby Venning (Greenfield, NH). Bear freshmen Joao Machado (Newton, MA) and Kyle Moran (Edgartown, MA) were victorious in the second position, while sophomores Trevor Koon (Springfield, MA) and Shawn Robinson (Uxbridge, MA) won at three.
In singles play, Chang nearly completed a rally to force a third set at the No. 1 spot, dropping a 6-3, 7-5 match to Campbell. Zagame, sophomore Nicholas Desisto (Uxbridge, MA) and freshmen Jesse Gotlib (Dartmouth, MA), Cody Farrell (Scituate, MA) and Colin Fontaine (Westfield, MA) added straight-set wins in the second through sixth slots, respectively.
The Wildcats continue a four-match homestand by taking on New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) leader Lesley University on Tuesday at 4 p.m. on the Winsor Courts. The Bears travel to the University of Southern Maine on Tuesday afternoon to face the Huskies at 3:30 in a Little East Conference match.
