Men's Tennis Downs Johnson & Wales, 8-1

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University men's tennis team posted an 8-1 victory over non-conference foe Johnson & Wales University in the Bears' home opener at chilly Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts in Bridgewater.

The Bears' swept the three doubles flights and captured five of the six singles matches to come away with the victory.

Bridgewater's top singles and doubles player, senior David Campbell (Vineyard Haven, Mass.), helped lead the hosts to their second win in as many games to start the season.  Campbell teamed with junior captain Mike Zagame (Uxbridge, Mass.) for an 8-2 triumph at first doubles, and breezed to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at number one singles.

Zagame added a 6-0, 6-3 win at second singles and the Bears also received straight set triumphs from freshman Jesse Gotlib (Dartmouth, Mass.) at the fourth flight (6-2, 6-1) and senior captain Nicholas Amrose (Arlington, Mass.) at number five (6-2, 6-0).

BSU freshman Colin Fontaine (Westfield, Mass.) battled his way to a three set tiebreaker at the sixth flight (6-0, 6-7, 10-6), while Johnson and Wales picked up their lone point of the match as senior Nicholas Simon (Rumford, R.I.) posted a 6-3, 6-3 win at third singles.

In doubles action, Amrose and freshman Cody Farrell (Scituate, Mass.) won 8-1 at the second flight, while Gotlib and freshman Joao Machado (Newton, Mass.) captured an 8-3 victory at number three.

The Bears return to the court on Thursday afternoon when they host Roger Williams University at 4:00 PM.  Johnson and Wales (0-2) entertains GNAC foe Emerson College on Saturday at noon.
