Men's Tennis Posts 8-1 Win over Clark University

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State College men's tennis team posted an 8-1 victory over Clark University in the Bears' 2010 home opener on Monday afternoon at the Henry Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts in Bridgewater.

Bridgewater improves to 2-2 with the non-conference win, while Clark falls to 2-2 on the season.

The Bears jumped out to a 3-0 lead after sweeping the three doubles matches.  Sophomore Juan Ortiz (Asuncion, Paraguay) and senior Armindo Rocha (Brockton, MA) teamed up for an 8-5 win at first doubles, while freshman Matt Mailhot (Oxford, MA) and sophomore Mike Zagame (Uxbridge, MA) posted an 8-2 triumph at the second flight.  Sophomore Adam Laithy (North Smithfield, RI) and junior Nicholas Amrose (Arlington, MA) won the third doubles match by a score of 8-5.

Ortiz remained unbeaten in singles play as he improved to 3-0 at the top flight with a 6-1, 6-1 straight set victory.  Mailhot (6-1, 6-0), Rocha (6-2, 6-0) and Zagame (7-5, 6-4) also won in straight sets at the second, third and fifth flights respectively.  Laithy battled back from a set down to win at number four, 2-6, 7-6, 11-9.

Senior Marcus Abramson (Palm Beach Gardens, FL) picked up the lone Clark victory with a 6-4, 2-6, 10-6 triumph at number six singles.

Bridgewater hosts Emerson College in a non-conference match on Thursday afternoon at 3:30.  Clark travels to Babson College on Tuesday for a three o'clock New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference contest with the Beavers.
