Men's Soccer Posts 3-0 MASCAC Shutout Over Worcester State

By Jim Fenton

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University men's soccer team moved into sole possession of first place in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Saturday afternoon.

Junior Tyler Chang (Acushnet, Mass.) scored two goals as the Bears defeated Worcester State University, 3-0, at Mazzaferro Field. Junior Connor Wesloski (Wilbraham, Mass.) assisted on both of Chang's goals for his first points of the season.

The Bears and Lancers entered the game tied for second place, one point behind the Massachusetts Maritime Academy.

Now, BSU (4-1) is on top of the standings with 12 points followed by Mass. Maritime (3-1-1) while Worcester State (3-2) is third. The Bears have won the past two MASCAC regular-season titles.

BSU (6-5 overall) scored a pair of first-half goals and prevented the Lancers (4-6) from getting any offense going.

Junior goalkeeper Kyle Sullivan (Enfield, Conn.) recorded the shutout, his fourth in 10 starts. Sullivan did not have to make a save as BSU held an 11-0 edge in shots on goal and a 26-1 advantage in overall shots.

The Bears took a 1-0 lead just 4:17 into the game when freshman Ansley Glemaud (Dorchester Center, Mass.) scored his first collegiate goal.

A mistake by the Lancers led to the goal as a defender tried to head the ball to the goalkeeper, who was coming out to play the ball. Glemaud ran to the ball and easily tapped it into an open net.

The lead went to 2-0 at 39:27 as senior Melvin Alves (Brockton, Mass.) sent a cross from the right side into the 18. A header by Wesloski hit the far post, and Chang was there to convert the rebound.

The Bears added a goal at 69:00 as Chang buried a left-footed shot from 22 yards out into the top right corner.

BSU had other bids as sophomore Dermott Amorim (Wrentham, Mass.) sent a shot to the left corner of the net that hit the post in the 20th minutes, and a header by senior Dominek Borden (New Bedford, Mass.) hit the crossbar in the 48th minute.

Worcester State junior keeper Tobias Schneider (Hudson, Wisc.) had eight saves.

This was the Morgan's Message Awareness game. Morgan's Message "promotes the idea that mental healthcare for student-athletes should be treated with the same importance as physical healthcare, aiming to eliminate the stigma and normalize conversations about mental health in the athletic community.''

BSU has a non-conference road game against Rhode Island College at 4 p.m.

Worcester State is home Tuesday night for a 7 p.m. non-conference game with Springfield College.
