BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Bridgewater State University junior Kacie Sturgeon has been named the Little East Conference (LEC) Field Hockey Goaltender of the Week.
Sturgeon is the second BSU netminder to garner goalkeeper of the week honors this season. She joins senior teammate Cassie Johansen (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) who earned the distinction back on September 10th.
Sturgeon backstopped the Bears to a perfect 3-0 record last week as she notched 12 saves, a .923 save percentage and a 0.40 goals against average. The Dartmouth, Massachusetts native turned aside seven shots in a 2-0 shutout victory at LEC foe Framingham State and made three saves in one half of action in a 4-2 win over Anna Maria. Sturgeon capped off the week with two saves in a 4-0 shutout of conference rival Western Connecticut State.
In nine games this season, Sturgeon is 5-0 with 28 saves, three shutouts and an impressive 0.74 goals against average. She leads the conference in goals against average, ranks second in save percentage and is tied for the fourth in shutouts.
Winners of seven straight, the BSU field hockey team is currently 12-1 on the season and tied for first place in the Little East Conference (LEC) standings with a 7-0 league mark. With 12 wins in their first 13 games, the Bears are off to the best start in program history.
Sturgeon and her teammates will look to extend their winning streak to eight games on Tuesday night when the Bears travel to New England College for a seven o’clock game with the Pilgrims. On Saturday, Bridgewater takes on Little East rival UMass Dartmouth at noon in North Dartmouth. The Corsairs (9-3, 7-0 LEC) are also unbeaten in conference play.
