Shelby Farland Named Little East Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Bridgewater State University senior midfielder Shelby Farland has been named the Little East Conference Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Week.

A native of Fiskdale, Massachusetts, Farland produced 15 points, on six goals and three assists, to power Bridgewater State to a 2-1 mark this past week with wins over Wheaton College and Little East foe Fitchburg State University.

Farland registered a career-high nine points, including four markers, to lead the Bears to an 8-1 victory over Fitchburg on Saturday.  The following afternoon, she found the back of the net twice in a 7-1 win at Wheaton. Earlier in the week, Farland handed out a pair of helpers in a 5-2 road setback to Babson College.

Through eight games this season, Farland has notched 12 goals and seven assists for 31 points.  She currently leads the Little East in both scoring and goals.  Farland is also tied for the league lead in game-winning goals (3) and ranks second in the conference in assists.

In 66 games over four seasons with the Bears, Farland has amassed 40 goals and 19 assists for 99 career points.  She ranks third all-time at Bridgewater State in both scoring and goals and is tied for fourth in assists.

Farland needs just one point to become the third player in program history to reach the 100-point milestone.  Karen Croteau (1979-82) is the Bears’ all-time leading scorer with 186 career points (82G, 22A) followed by Bethany Bush (2007-10) with 119 (47G, 25A).

The Bridgewater State University field hockey team is currently 7-1 on the season and tied for first in the Little East standings with a 3-0 conference record.  The team is off to its best start since the 1985 squad went unbeaten through the first ten games (9-0-1) and finished the season with a record of 11-3-1.
