BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- For the second time this season, Bridgewater State University junior midfielder Shelby Farland has been selected as the Little East Conference (LEC) Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Week.
A native of Fiskdale, Massachusetts, Farland tallied three goals, including a pair of game-winners, to go along with an assist for seven points in a 2-0 week for the Bears which included a pair of Little East wins over Framingham State and Western Connecticut State.
Farland scored the game-winning goal and added an assist in Bridgewater’s 4-1 win over Framingham. She then netted a pair of goals, including the game-winner in overtime, as the Bears downed Western Connecticut State University, 2-1, in double overtime.
Through 12 games this season, Farland has amassed ten goals, including four game-winners, to go along with three assists for a total of 23 points. She is currently tied for the Little East lead in game-winning goals, ranks sixth in scoring and is tied for fifth in goals.
Farland is averaging over a point a game in 50 career games as she has totaled 21 goals and nine assists for 51 points. Eight of her 21 goals have been game-winners and the BSU field hockey team has produced a record of 30-20 (.600) since she arrived in 2009.
The 2011 Bears have won eight straight games and are currently 9-3 on the season. With five games remaining in the regular season, Bridgewater is in fourth place in the Little East standings with a 5-2 league mark.
BSU will host non-conference foe Endicott College on Thursday night at seven followed by a key home conference match with UMass Dartmouth on Saturday at noon.
