BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Bridgewater State University junior midfielder Shelby Farland has been selected as a Little East Conference (LEC) Field Hockey Co-Offensive Player of the Week. Farland shares the honor along with Worcester State senior forward Samantha Janda.
A native of Fiskdale, Massachusetts, Farland exploded for five goals and two assists for 12 points to help Bridgewater State boast a perfect 4-0 mark last week which included a 2-1 victory over Little East foe Fitchburg State. She scored at least one goal in each of the Bears’ four contests.
Farland opened the week with a three-point performance (1G, 2A) in Bridgewater’s 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Babson. Two days later, she scored a pair of goals and amassed a season-high four points in a 4-1 win against Anna Maria. Shelby also registered a goal to help the Bears earn their first conference victory at Fitchburg this past Saturday. The following afternoon, she produced the game-winning goal in a 2-1 triumph over Wheaton.
Through eight games this season, Farland is currently tied for tenth in the Little East with her five goals.
In 46 games over three seasons with the Bears, Shelby has amassed 16 goals and eight assists for 40 points. She has started all 46 games since arriving at Bridgewater State in 2009 and has five game-winning goals to her credit.
The BSU field hockey team has won each of their past four games as their record now stands at 5-3 with a 1-2 mark in Little East play. The Bears travel to Westfield State on Wednesday night for a seven o’clock Little East match with the Owls. Bridgewater returns home to take on conference foe Worcester State on Saturday at noon.
