BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University baseball team finished the regular season with a doubleheader split on Saturday afternoon.
The Bears defeated Westfield State University, 8-4, in the opener, then allowed three runs with two outs in the seventh inning and lost the nightcap, 5-4.
BSU is the No. 1 seed and will host the majority of the games of the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament after going 17-4 in the conference.
The Bears are 26-12 heading into the postseason and will be seeking a fourth straight trip to the NCAA Division III tournament.
Bridgewater will take on either fourth-seeded Worcester State University or fifth-seeded Salem State Unibversity on Thursday afternoon at roughly three o'clock.
Westfield State finished tied for second place with the Massachusetts Maritime Academy at 13-8, four games behind BSU. The Owls are the three seed and will take on #6 Framingham State University on Thursday afternoon at one o'clock at Massachusetts Maritime Academy.
Game One: Bridgewater State 8, Westfield State 4
Senior Scott Emerson (Peabody, Mass.) went 3-for-3 with a home run and drove in four runs to lead theBears, who had only six hits in the win.
Junior CJ Hess (Providence, R.I.) was the winning pitcher. He is 1-0 after giving up one hit in 1 2-3 innings of relief. Hess was the third of four pitchers, including the starter, sophomore Jaden Arruda (Seekonk, Mass.), who worked 3 2-3 innings.
Emerson gave BSU a 1-0 lead in the first with a leadoff homer, his fourth of the season.
Westfield State tied it in the second with an unearned run as a misplayed ball in the infield scored senior Jonathan Toth (Granby, Mass.), who had singled.
BSU went in front, 2-1, in the second on an Emerson bases-loaded single, scoring junior Ryan Flaherty (Duxbury, Mass.).
The lead went to 5-1 in the fourth, scoring three runs without a hit.
Senior Kevin Lindsay (East Bridgewater, Mass.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, senior Brendan Flaven walked with the bases full and an error scored the third run.
The Owls closed to 5-4 in the fifth inning on a two-run single to right by senior Devin Slattery (Ware, Mass.) and an RBI hit to left by Toth.
BSU built a 7-4 lead in the bottom of the inning on a two-run double to left-center by Emerson after a single by senior DJ Prampin (Worcester, Mass.) and a double by freshman Jamie Luna (Warwick, R.I.).
The Bears' final run in the sixth came on a homer to left by senior Philip Messina (Dunkirk, N.Y.). He now has six homers on the season.
Game Two: Westfield State 5, Bridgewater State 4
BSU took a 4-2 lead into the top of the seventh and there were two outs when the Owls got the rally going.
Senior Dan Burnett (Granville, Mass.) homered to left field and senior Nick Marshall (Reading, Mass.) was hit by a pitch. He went to third when a single by senior Sam Palmer (Medfield, Mass.) went for an error in left.
That put runners in scoring position for junior Chase Racine (Pittsfield, Mass.), who hit a double to right field for the tying and go-ahead run.
BSU held a 1-0 lead in the third as junior Joshua Selander (Granby, Conn.) reached on a fielder's choice and scored on an error.
The Bears added two runs in the fourth as Prampin hit his eighth homer and senior Brendan Flaven (Taunton, Mass.) added an RBI single, scoring Emerson, who was hit by a pitch.
Westfield State pulled within 3-2 in the fifth on a two-out, two-run single to right by Marshall.
The Bears' final run came in the fifth on an RBI single to right by Prampin, scoring junior Oscar Vargas-Pacheco (Bound Brook, N.J.).
Senior Dominic Novio (Mansfield, Mass.) was the winning pitcher and is now 4-1. He pitched 1 1-3 innings of relief.
Freshman Cameron Connolly (Peabody, Mass.) took the loss, working two-thirds of an inning as the third of four Bears' pitchers.
Lindsay, Flaven, Prampin and Vargas-Pacheco had two hits each for BSU, which finished with nine.
