CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Freshman Josh Goehring (Haverhill, Mass.) set a school record to lead the Bridgewater State University men's indoor track and field team at the non-scoring Harvard Open on Saturday afternoon.
Competition featured teams from all three divisions in New England and several club teams.
Goehring set the Bears' indoor record in the 500-meter dash and placed third at the meet with a time of 1:07.10. He broke the previous BSU mark of 1:07.86 set by Fernando Vieira in 2008. Goehring also qualified for the ECAC Division III Championships in the 500.
The Bears 4 x 440 relay team featuring Goehring, sophomore Paul Kofi-Fleyn (Natick, Mass.) and juniors Andrew Corley (Milton, Mass.) and Tom Coyle (Franklin, Mass.) registered an 11th place showing (3:34.99).
Junior Michael McPherson (Mansfield, Mass.) was one of three Bears to place in the top ten in the shot put. McPherson finished third overall and posted the top Division III distance with a put of 48 feet, 7.5 inches. He was also 19th in the weight throw with a toss of 42 feet, 8.25 inches.
Junior Stephan Cawley (Dedham, Mass.) finished fifth in the shot (47'6.50"), while Christian Lavoie (Marion, Mass.) placed ninth (44' 9.00"). Cawley and Lavioe both qualified for Division III New Englands while Cawley also qualified for ECACs.
After finishing 14th in the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash, junior Felix Mensah (Lowell, Mass.) moved up to seventh with a finals time of 7.11 seconds as he qualified for DIII New Englands. Mensah also placed 18th in the 200-meter dash (23.27 seconds).
Freshman Brendan Zielinski (Bethel, Conn.) grabbed the 19th spot in the 800-meter run crossing the finish line in 2:05.30, while junior David Phipps (Attleboro, Mass.) placed 13th in the 3,000-meter run (9:00.42).
Sophomore Matt Horan (Billerica, Mass.) posted an eighth place time of 8.60 seconds in the preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles. Horan would slip to 14th in the finals with a time of 9.30 seconds.
Sophomore Joshua Danner-Hicks (Haverhill, Mass.) placed 18th in the triple jump (41'11.50") and 26th in the long jump (19'2.00").
The Bears are off until after the semester break when they compete at the Bates Invitational on January 21st.
