FITCHBURG, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University women's outdoor track & field team placed second at the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Championships held in conjunction with the New England Alliance Championships on Saturday at the Elliot Field Athletic Complex in Fitchburg.
The Bears recorded 221 points to finish just behind conference champion Westfield State University (231 pts.). Worcester State University (151 pts.) rounded out the top three in the MASCAC standings.
Bridgewater finished fourth in the New England Alliance results with 104 points. Rhode Island College won the Alliance title with 147 points, while Westfield State (121.5 pts.) placed second and Keene State College (115.5 pts.) finished third.
Senior Jayci Andrews (Plymouth, Mass.) captured the MASCAC and Alliance individual championships in two events. Andrews placed first in the 100-meter hurdles (15.56) and the 400-meter hurdles (1:04.64).
Senior Kira Gilbreath (West Haven, Utah) won the MASCAC and New England Alliance titles in the shot put with a season-best toss of 44 feet, 6.25 inches (13.57m).
Seniors Molly McNamara (Hull, Mass.) and Emily Guyon (Hopedale, Mass.) and junior Jessica Haywood (East Longmeadow, Mass.) also won MASCAC individual titles for the Bears. McNamara posted a career-best leap of 17 feet (5.18m) in the long jump, while Guyon completed the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 12:41.89 and Haywood recorded a career-best time of 2:28.63 in the 800-meter run.
McNamara also set the school record in the triple jump with a leap of 36 feet, 11.75 inches (11.27m). She eclipsed the Bears' previous mark of 36 feet, 1.50 inches set by Carrie Robitaille in 2011.
Next weekend, qualifying members of the BSU women's indoor track & field team will compete at the Division III New England Championships hosted by Williams College.
