BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The visiting Keene State College Owls edged Bridgewater State University, 2-1, in non-conference women's soccer action on Wednesday night at Swenson Field.
Keene improves to 10-5 on the season with the win, while Bridgewater slips to 7-6-1. The Owls are 13-0-1 all-time versus the Bears since the teams first met in 1997.
After a scoreless first half, sophomore midfielder Kara Pavlidis (Lee, N.H.) put the visitors on top in the 56th minute of play. Pavlidis received a long through ball off the foot of senior midfielder Sia Karamourtopolous (Fremont, N.H.) and beat the BSU keeper one-on-one.
The Owls made it a 2-0 game in the 70th minute as freshman midfielder Alex Haley (Laconia, N.H.) received a pass from sophomore midfielder Jessica Berthiaume (Worcester, Mass.) and rifled a shot from just inside the 18 into the back right corner of the net.
Bridgewater got a late goal from sophomore forward Katie Johnson (Marshfield, Mass.) with just 15 seconds remaining in the contest. Junior defender Melanie Thomson (Abington, Mass.) created the scoring opportunity as she hit a streaking Johnson in stride with a long pass through the middle. Johnson collected the ball and chipped a shot over the Keene netminder.
The Owls outshot the Bears by a margin of 17-13 including a 13-5 edge in the second half.
Senior goaltender Megan Dempsey (East Weymouth, Mass.) made five saves in goal for Keene State to record her tenth win of the season. BSU junior Kristen Rowe (Burlington, Mass.) kept the Owls off the scoreboard in the first half as she stopped three shots. Sophomore Kerry Condon (Whitman, Mass.) played the final 45 minutes and recorded five saves.
Both teams will be back in action on Saturday afternoon. Bridgewater hosts MASCAC foe Framingham State University at four, while Keene entertains Little East Conference rival Rhode Island College at one.
