BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Bridgewater State University seniors Jenny Jones (Framingham, Mass.) and Courtney Lennon (Medfield, Mass.) and sophomore Jill Caramello (Duxbury, Mass.) swept the New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) weekly awards, the league announced Tuesday. Jones was named the NEWLA Offensive Player of the Week, while Lennon and Caramello earned defensive player and rookie of the week honors respectively
Bridgewater State captured the NEWLA Tournament championship for the fourth straight season and sixth time in program history as the Bears earned the conference's automatic qualifier (AQ) to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Bridgewater downed Westfield State in the semifinals, 17-2, and knocked off Castleton State in the finals for the fourth consecutive year, 15-8.
Jones scored 12 goals and dished out three assists for a total of 15 points during Bridgewater's NEWLA Tournament title run. She also added three ground balls. Jones tallied six goals, two assists and two ground balls in BSU's semifinal win over Westfield, and notched six goals, an assist and a ground ball in the Bears' championship game victory over Castleton.
Lennon registered six controlled draws, five caused turnovers and three ground balls on the week as well as six goals and an assist. She notched three draws, two caused turnovers and a ground ball to go along with three goals against Westfield, and three caused turnovers, three draws, a pair of ground balls as well as three goals and an assist versus Castleton.
Caramello scored seven goals and added a ground ball in the Bears' two tournament games. She found the back of the net five times in the semifinal win, and notched a pair of goals in the championship game.
On the season, Jones has 73 goals and 26 assists to her credit for 99 points as she is tied for 12th in all of Division III in goals and tied for 14th in scoring. Lennon has amassed 48 goals and 31 helpers, while Caramello checks in with 43 goals and 11 assists.
The BSU women's lacrosse team will take on 10th ranked Stevens Institute of Technology in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 PM in Hoboken, New Jersey.
