BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Senior midfielder Kessy Alves (Brockton, Mass.) tallied a pair of goals to lead the Bridgewater State University men's soccer team to a 3-0 shutout victory over visiting Rhode Island College on Wednesday night at Swenson Field.
The Bears improve to 4-1 on the season, while the Anchormen fall to 1-2-1. Bridgewater is now 13-16-1 (.450) versus RIC since 1980.
Senior midfielder Kane Moran (Perth, Australia) converted a penalty kick in the 22nd minute to give the Bears a 1-0 lead. Freshman midfielder Odair Monteiro (Fogo, Cape Verde) drew the foul in the box which led to the penalty kick attempt.
Alves knocked home the rebound of a Kevin Roberts (Medway, Mass.) shot to extend the BSU advantage to 2-0 in the 66th minute. Alves collected the rebound just inside the six and buried a shot into the center of the unguarded net.
Alves made it a 3-0 game just 71 seconds later as he scored off a give-and-go with junior forward Joseph Cruise (Brockton, Mass.). Alves beat the netminder with a shot to the right side of the net from ten yards out.
Junior midfielder Michael Faria (West Warwick, R.I.) nearly broke up the shutout bid in the latter stages of the contest as he rang a shot off the post with just 1:25 remaining.
BSU junior netminder Nate Morgado (Dartmouth, Mass.) turned aside six shots to record his first shutout of the season and eighth of his career.
The Anchormen held a slight 13-12 advantage in shots as well as a 3-1 edge in corner kick attempts.
Sophomore keeper Charlie Tashjian (West Warwick, R.I.) made four saves in the setback for RIC.
Both teams open conference play on Saturday afternoon. The Bears entertain defending Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) champion Salem State University at noon, while the Anchormen host Little East Conference (LEC) rival University of Southern Maine at one.
