BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University received high individual accolades when the 2010 Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) All-Conference Men's Soccer Team was announced. The Bears had five players receiving such great honors.
Senior Mike White (Canton, Mass.), junior Donald Flores (Cranston, R.I.), as well as sophomore Simao Mendes (Brockton, Mass.) all were selected to the All-MASCAC First Team. Meanwhile, juniors Dan Roberts (Braintree, Mass.) and Jose DePina (Boston, Mass.) were second team honorees.
Mike White is making his first appearance on the MASCAC All-Conference Team. He has been a defensive force in the Bears' backfield, with his team only allowing 23 goals this year through the first 17 games. White has started all 17 games this season for Bridgewater State, with a goal and an assist from his defensive position.
Making his third appearance on the all conference team, Donald Flores was selected after missing all of the 2009 season. He was a second team selection in 2007 as a freshman, a first team selection in 2008 as a sophomore, and he is back again atop the MASCAC. Flores, who has started all 17 games, tallied a goal during this past season as well as a team leading eight assists. He has controlled the midfield for the Bears, taking most of their set pieces.
Also on the first team this year, making his second consecutive appearance is Simao Mendes. Mendes, also an every game starter for the Bears, is an electrifying striker. With five goals and five assists during this campaign, Mendes followed his MASCAC Rookie of the Year season with much impact.
DePina and Roberts were selected to the All-MASCAC Second Team. This is Roberts' second appearance on the team, as he was a first team selection a year ago. Roberts has four assists this season, and has also started every game for the Bears. DePina is making his inaugural appearance on the all-conference team. He is tied for the team lead in both goals with nine and in scoring with 19 points.
The BSU men's soccer team has an overall record of 12-5, including a 5-2 MASCAC regular season mark. The Bears, the number two seed in the conference tournament, dropped a 2-1 decision in double overtime to number three seed Salem State in the tournament semifinals. Bridgewater is the top seed for the ECAC Division III New England Tournament which gets underway on Wednesday. The Bears will take on eighth-seeded Lesley University in quarterfinal round action on Wednesday at 4:00 PM.
