BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Bridgewater State University senior first baseman David Pierce has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Baseball Player of the Week.
Pierce banged out three hits in six at bats with a double, two sacrifice flies, two runs scored and five RBI in BSU’s doubleheader split with Rhode Island College this past weekend. The East Bridgewater, Massachusetts native went 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI in the Bears’ 8-4 win over the Anchormen, and finished 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI in a 6-5 setback.
In ten games this season, Pierce is batting .425 (17-40) with two doubles, a triple, 12 runs, 11 runs batted in and three stolen bases. He leads the MASCAC with three sacrifice flies and is tied for the conference lead in RBI. Pierce also ranks second in the circuit in runs and hits, third in total bases, fifth in slugging percentage (.525) and seventh in batting.
In 114 games over four seasons with the Bears, Piece has posted a career .355 (137-386) batting average with three home runs, 25 doubles, five triples, 76 runs, 78 RBI and 20 stolen bases. He has also committed just four errors in 807 chances for an outstanding .995 fielding percentage.
Last season, Pierce made his second straight appearance on the All-MASCAC Team as he helped the Bears capture both the MASCAC regular season and tournament titles and advance to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the 14th time in program history. He was also a second team selection on the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) Division III All-New England Team and was named to the D3baseball.com All-New England Third Team.
The BSU baseball team is currently 5-5 on the season. The Bears continue their season-opening 17-game road swing on Tuesday afternoon when they travel to Wheaton College to take on the Lyons at 3:30.
